Youth Staff Shift

The following post is written by Larry Heslip, Minister of Education/Administration at Tallowood.  He is an amazing leader for our church and uses words like “heretofore.”  Awesome!

This new Sunday School year, beginning August 20, will bring a new alignment in the youth ministerial staff leadership.  This realignment comes after a prolonged study of our effectiveness and our desire to capture the best skills and abilities of our staff.  Heretofore we have assigned the tasks according to age groups with Jerome supervising the entire program, Micah working with Middle School students and Rebecca working with Senior High students.

The change in assignment places the ministers with responsibility according to their gifts and the successes they have enjoyed.  Jerome will continue to coordinate the student ministry with Micah leading out in the teaching and outreach ministry and Rebecca overseeing the discipleship, leadership and mission’s ministry with students.  Jerome is also assuming the responsibility for coordinating the Devoted Hearts and Homes ministry which is being developed more completely to work with homes of all ages in the church.  Jerome will be on sabbatical early this fall.  He is mostly using that time to learn more about the ministries to homes employed by churches across the country because home development is critical to our future as a church and to our community at large. It is our ambition to make our ministries more successful and to reach our community more effectively with these changes.

DEVOTED: Facebook, Twitter, & Texting with Dr. Allen Jackson

In case you missed it, check out Dr. Jackson’s session on Culture and Technology from May 1st at Tallowood.

DEVOTED – This Weekend at Tallowood

Our church has recently begun a strong focus on living out faith in the home.  This focus is largely the result of a growing number of teenagers and young adults who walk away from their faith when they move out on their own.  Research indicates anywhere from 60% to 90% of children who grow up in the church will walk away from their faith with only a small percentage of these coming back to the church at some point later in life.

One of the leading causes of this church drop out rate is the lack of connection between parents and their kids regarding their faith in Christ.  To help turn this tide and equip parents to lead their children in the faith, Tallowood is focusing in on what it means to be a Godly family.  This is not just a family that attends church, but instead, a family that loves God with all of their hearts and lives out this faith in the home.  Thus, DEVOTED: Heart and Homes.

This weekend, we are excited to welcome Dr. Allen Jackson from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Jackson is a professor of Youth Ministry and brings relevant insight into the wide array of technology that floods our world, particularly in the lives of children and students.

Dr. Jackson will be discussing “Facebook, Twitter, & Texting: Living in Today’s Culture” three times during this special Devoted weekend.

• Saturday, April 30th – 5 pm at the Tallowood Center

• Sunday, May 1st – 10 am and 11:15 am in the Tallowood Gym on the church’s main campus.

If you are in the Houston area, please come join us for one of these sessions.  I know it will be powerful!
